First, Baron got competitive bids for each part of the job, and he selected only honest, qualified craftsmen. I was a little concerned, at first, who would be working in our home, and Stephen assured me that if he would not let the craftsman in his own home then that crafts man would not be in our home. Second, Baron and Stephen kept me informed on the construction progress i.e., what trades would be working this week and kept me informed on a daily basis. Third, we had some changes*. I think all construction projects will have some changes as you progress. Baron, Stephen, me, and my wife always talked as a team with my wife having the final approval* However, Baron and Stephen always listened carefully to what we wanted to accomplish and gave their input with us having the final say. The Houser family are long time residents of Boerne and Fair Oaks but have spent the last 2 decades involved with the building of new homes in San Antonio and other large cities throughout the South. We returned home 11 years ago to raise our growing family but have built exclusively in the San Antonio MSA until recently when we made the decision to bring our brand of construction to my hometown states Houser the company's President. Fair Oaks is blessed with some really talented builders but what sets StoneHouse apart from the rest is our experience. Baron has been fortunate to work for some the largest residential builders in the world. That experience over the last 24 years has taught me some key facts states Houser. Big does not have to mean expensive, an address does not dictate a price and each home should be built for any stage of life. January 3, 2011Welcome Baron and Lori Houser with StoneHouse BuildersFair Oaks Ranch residents Baron and Lori Houser have enjoyed many blessings. By following the words of Luke 12:48, "to those whom much is given, much is required," the Housers have had the privilege of returning their blessings to the many communities where they have lived and worked.Baron moved to Boerne 44 years' ago when he was in the first grade, while Lori grew up in San Angelo. The two met in 1982 -both attended Angelo State University and married in 1988. During the first 12 years of their marriage, the Housers crisscrossed the southern United States, building their careers and their family as they went along. It was during these busy years Baron and Lori began to realize the importance of community service and giving to others and also the importance of involving their children in their ministry. Initially focusing on Baron's career as a homebuilder, the young couple first settled in Florida, where their oldest son, Barrett, was born. While living there, one of Lori's •co-workers, a young widow, was struggling to make ends' meet and could not afford Christmas gifts for her three young children. Lori recalled thinking, "They just lost their dad they have to have Christmas!" Springing into action, Lori collected money for gifts and Baron bargained with a Christmas tree salesman for a small tree. They hand-delivered the holiday goodies to the family, which started a Houser family tradition that survives to this day. As the real estate market declined; the couple followed Lori's career in pharmacy management to New Mexico where they were' blessed with the arrival of their second son, Regan. It was there they refined their Christmas tradition. "We went out and purchased Christmas presents, a tree and trimmings' and delivered them to a family's home on the tough side of town," Baron remembered 'The amusing part to me was that we put all of the goods on the front porch of this run-down home and then rang the doorbell and ran like crazy. It was our version of ding-dong ditching."The family next moved to Georgia, where they welcomed their third son, Sutton Afterwards, Lori took some time off to manage their growing family. Baron and Lon eventually tired of the frequent moves, the big-corporations and the accompanying stress. "It was time to bring the kids home and raise them," Baron said. "And we knew just where to go." They returned to the Boerne area in 2000, where they could simplify and enjoy a slower pace of life. Ethan, the Housers' fourth son, arrived shortly thereafter. The Housers were thrilled to be back in Baron's hometown among family and friends, including Baron's childhood buddy and neighbor, Sam Champion. Baron and Sam had gotten each other out of many scrapes as kids, so Sam knew just who to call when he needed some help with one of his special projects in 2002. Sam had retired from being principal of Boerne High School and founded an organization he called SAM'S Kids (Students Achieving Maximum Success), with the goal of identifying the neediest children in the BISD, then providing the programs, people and services to help those children meet their full potential.That November, three of Sam's at-risk students experienced a family crisis and were virtually homeless. Sam helped place the children in the care of their uncle, who had three children of his own but no job. The family needed immediate assistance, so Sam called Baron and Lori. Baron organized a food drive among his coworkers, and they were able to get the family through the holidays. As Baron and Lori talked to Sam about the needs of not only those three children, but also all the other at-risk children in the district, it became clear that more needed to be done. With 700 children initially identified for assistance, Lori suggested a fundraiser. Sam, who was never shy about asking for what he needed when it came to the wellbeing of his students, replied, "OK, Lori, get us one!" Lori gathered a group of girlfriends, raised some money to get SAM'-S Kids through the school year and found herself serving as Sam's "Girl Friday" for' the next several years. Often, her four boys would accompany her to the Blue Bus to help with afterschool tutoring or to just play ball. Lori helped establish SAM'•S Kids .as a 501c3 foundation and recruited board of directors, making the nonprofit eligible for gifts from Major donors. When Sam became ill, Lori took over organizing and managing the program, which now provides numerous BISD children with afterschool tutoring as well as school supplies and backpacks, medical and dental treatment, band instruments and extracurricular fees. Lori recently added another layer to SAM'S Kids with an initiative called Ladies in Purposeful Service, which reaches out to the mothers of at-risk kids.In 2008, with SAM'S Kids flourishing and her own kids growing up, Lori decided to jump back into her career. She now serves as the Director of Pharmacy at Foundation Surgical Hospital in San Antonio. Following Lori's return to the workforce, Baron founded StoneHouse Builders, his own residential construction and remodeling firm. He has enjoyed stepping back from the fast-paced corporate world and now spends much of his time on various job sites, getting his hands dirty and really focusing on his clients and their needs. Best of all, he gets to spend a lot more time with his family and encourages the boys to work with him at a job site every now and then.With Lori and Baron as their role models, their children have not only learned the value of hard work, but also the value of giving back to their community. Lori has spent time in Uganda spreading the gospel. Baron is a member of the Christian Men of Boerne (CMB) organization, which cooks Thanksgiving turkeys every year for families who need a hand during the holidays. He is also a coach for the Boerne Youth Athletic Association (BYAA) and sits on its board of directors. Baron was honored recently when he was asked to join the Boerne Centurions, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for scholarships and local charities. In conjunction with Smith and Smith Ministries, the Housers recently helped establish Footprints in the Sand Youth Ministry and assisted in the construction of a top-of-the-line sand volleyball court at the Big Yellow Cross Church. It will be used to offer youth in the community a safe and wholesome place to gather. Throughout their many years of community involvement, Baron and Lori have learned several important things. First, there is an ever-growing number of organizations, activities, and charities that need caring souls. Second, anyone can lend a hand, and in doing so, inspire others to make a difference. Third, in making community service a family affair, children learn at an early age the importance and responsibility of taking care of their greater family, the family of God.When Baron was growing up in Boerne, he recalls a time when everyone pitched in. to help everyone else. "When someone needed help hauling hay, you went and hauled hay. It wasn't a civic duty, it's just what you did," he recalled. We didn't call it community service back then, we called it being a community. We called it being a good neighbor." Here in the Hill Country, we are fortunate to have the Housers as our neighbors, and good neighbors is exactly what they are.By Laurie Perryman, Staff Writer
